Regarded as one of the World’s worst mining disasters, the Wankie coal mine disaster happened on the 6th of June 1972 due to a series of underground explosions which took place at Wankie No.2 colliery in the then Rhodesia. With 427 lives which perished on that heartbreaking day, the accident remains the most tragic mine fatality, up to today, in the annals of our country’s, or even in the World’s mining history.
